Kicks Carter is an alter ego of Boston’s Brook Yacob aka MyHomeboy. He makes his debut on DJ Pierre’s Afro Deep with a three-track EP of looped soulful cuts.
First up is “Want to Be Free”—a laid-back acid-laced groover with a warm synth and a playful bassline that neatly highlight the echoing vocal woven throughout.
Next is “Treat Me Right”, Kicks Carter’s deep and funky take on an R&B classic, infused with a deep bass kick and classic house drum hits that breathe new life into the well-known and beloved song.
“Hope on the Rise” rounds out this EP nicely—with deep kicks, lush pads, and a bluesy sax paired with a jazzy, bubbling acid bassline that together create a space of calm and introspection while keeping the body in motion through the groove of the percussion.
